Sign of the Cross

Act of Contrition

O, My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, behold me standing before They divine presence all in confusion at the thought of the many grievous injuries I have done Thee. I ask pardon for them with my whole heart, repenting of them purely for love of Thee, hating them above every other evil in this life, and ready to lose my life rather than offend Thee again. And thou, most tender Virgin, Mother of Mercy and Refuge of Sinners, do thou obtain for me the pardon of all my sins by virtue of thy bitter pains; and grant me so to pray as to gain the indulgence attached to this thy holy Rosary.
V. Come, Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created. V.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus, reple tuorum corda fidelium, et tui amoris in eis ignem accende.  Emitte Spiritum tuum et creabuntur.
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. R. Et renovabis faciem terræ.
V.

Remember this Thy congregation [i.e., the Servite Order].

V. Memento congregationis tuæ.
R.

Which has been Thine from the beginning.

 R. Quam possedisti ab initio.
V.  O Lord, hear my prayer. V. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.
R.  And let my cry come unto Thee. R. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.
Let us pray.

Enlighten our minds, we beseech Thee, O Lord, with the light of Thy brightness, that we may see what we ought to do, and be able to do what is right, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

 Oremus.

Mentes nostras quæsumus Domine, lumine tuæ claritatis illustra, ut videre possimus quæ agenda sunt, et quæ recta sunt agere valeamus.  Per Christum Dominum nostrum.  Amen.
The Seven Dolors are then recited in this order:

  1. The Prophecy of Simeon (Pater, then seven Aves; N.B., the Gloria Patri is omitted).

  2. The flight into Egypt (Pater, then seven Aves).

  3. The loss of the Child Jesus (Pater, then seven Aves).

  4. Mary meets Jesus carrying His Cross (Pater, then seven Aves).

  5. The crucifixion (Pater, then seven Aves).

  6. Mary receives the body of Jesus from the Cross (Pater, then seven Aves).

  7. The body of Jesus is placed in the tomb (Pater, then seven Aves).
Three Aves are said in honor of the tears that Our Lady of Sorrows shed.

The Stabat Mater may then be said, followed by:
V.

Pray for us, most Sorrowful Virgin.

 V.

Ora pro nobis, Virgo Dolorosissima.
R.

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

 R.

Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.
Let us pray.

Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, that the Blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, may intercede for us before the Throne of Thy Mercy, now and at the hour of our death, through whose most holy soul in the hour of Thine own Passion the sword of sorrow passed.  Through Thee, Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, Who liveth and reigneth with the Father and the Holy Ghost, forever and ever.  Amen.

 Oremus.

Interveniat pro nobis, quæsumus, Domine Jesu Christe, nunc et in hora mortis nostræ apud tuam clementiam beata Virgo Maria Mater tua, cujus sacratissimam animam in hora tuæ passionis Doloris gladius pertransivit:  Per te Jesu Christe, Salvator mundi, qui cum Patre, et Spiritu Sancto vivis, et regnas in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.

A Pater, Ave and Gloria Patri is then said in honor of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order in order to obtain their intercession.

A Salve Regina is then said for the benefactors, both living and dead, of the Servite Order, and for all who habitually practice this devotion.

Then Our Lady of Sorrows is invoked for the Supreme Pontiff, the wants of Holy Mother Church and for all our necessities, spiritual and temporal.  Say three times:

V. Virgin most sorrowful. V. Virgo dolorosissima.
R. Pray for us. R. Ora pro nobis.
Then say once:
V. Us and all our race. V. Nos cum prole pia.
R.

Do thou bless, O sorrowful Virgin Mary.

 R. Benedicat dolorosa Virgo Maria.
